Can we really call it "winter" if we are in Marathon, Florida?
Which of these objects doesn't belong?
January 21, 2012
Greetings from sunny Marathon, FL.
Just a quick note to let everyone we are still alive and kicking. Our first month in Marathon, we stayed in a marina on the ocean side of the key. It had a fuel dock and a restaurant. We had been to the restaurant last winter before leaving for Sarasota. It was the first time we heard Joe Mama and John the banjo barrister play. Joe is a folk singer and John accompanies him on the banjo. They were really great. We were delighted to be so close to our favorite singers and every Friday we had front table seats to listen to them. Oh, the restaurant has the best fries in Marathon – not a good thing.
We spent a quiet and delightful Christmas with Jim and Lisa who drove down from Orlando.
The second week in January, we met our adult children for a cruise on the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line to Belize and Cozumel. It was the first cruise for all of us. The whole experience was amazing from 5-star dining to all of the varied on-board facilities. The trip certainly created wonderful family memories. The highlight was tubing through caves and zip lining across the tops of the rain forest in Belize. Our only souvenir was several more pounds around the waist and hips!
When we returned to Marathon, we moved the boat to the gulf side of the key to a different marina. It is more centrally located and we have friends here. It is also connected to a hotel and condos. We have access to the heated pool and hot tub where Francie can be found swimming laps each morning while Mike rides his bike. We meet back at the pool and sit in the hot tub before starting our day. We meet our neighbors every day at 5:00 for happy hour. The only thing missing is the fries – that is a good thing. Retirement is so stressful.
It is nice to be in one spot and be able to receive our mail, but there is a downside – Amazon.com can find us. Francie has made multiple purchases of things we have to have???? Mike (re)explained to her that things needed to be removed in order to make space for the new items. All things in nature are balanced, there are check and balances, the ying and yang. Mike proclaimed he is the natural predator to boat accumulation. This proclamation produced the expected rolling of the eyes and shaking of the head as Francie protected her most recent purchases from danger.
We have a couple of manatee that visit the marina periodically. The other day one of the guys in the marina was rubbing noses with the manatee. Later Francie was able to pet it as it hung around our dinghy.
We still plan to leave for the Bahamas at the beginning of March and are busy planning and provisioning.
